An abdominal Ultrasound can be performed to screen for an abdominal aortic aneurysm. This screening evaluates the swelling of the aorta, the main blood vessel that runs from your heart through your chest to your abdomen. An AAA develops slowly over time and has few noticeable symptoms but can be life-threatening if it bursts.
The U.S. Preventive Service Task Force (USPSTF) recommends a one-time screening for AAA for people at risk. You’re considered at risk if you have a family history of AAA or you are a man aged 65-75 and have smoked at least 100 cigarettes in your lifetime.
